Whiplash

Whiplash

Whiplash is an injury sustained as a result of violent head movement, normally seen after a car accident or high speed sporting injury. The muscles around the neck will often go into spasm as a protective mechanism and there will probably be some trauma to the neck ligaments. This will result in pain on movement, some swelling and a ‘stiff’ neck. You may also experience some referred pain down the arm or to the back of the shoulder. Restoring pain free normal movement is the principle aim of treatment. Physiotherapists can provide hands on massage and release techniques, stretching advice, deep isolated neck strengthening and then reintegration of movement into normal function. Pilates is also a fantastic exercise approach to control and promote further reoccurrences of pain.

Headaches

Headaches

Headaches can arise from many things such as dehydration, poor nutrition, problems with your eye sight, stress and nerve entrapment in the neck. All of these other factors can be addressed with an holistic Physiotherapy approach (yes – even including the eye strain!) Poor posture is a huge contributing factor in the presentation of headaches due to the build up of tension at the base of the skull in most people. This affects the conduction of the nerves to the neck and head and may also influence your balance. Hands on treatment should always include a detailed postural assessment and a combination of tissue release, joint mobilisation, neck strengthening and integration into daily movement.
