Hip InjuriesTotal Hip Replacement
A hip replacement (total or partial) will usually occur as a result of painful and debilitating osteoarthriitis of the hip. Surgery usually eliminates all previous pain and movement is usually commenced on day one post-op. Although most clients have great support within the hospital and inpatient rehabilitation setting for post operative treatment, it is often necessary to continue to work on hip strengthening and full functional integration back into more active movements or even sport. Continuing with treatment post discharge and more specific exercises can mean the difference between just walking or getting back to all your favorite activities whether they be running, going to the gym, playing golf or kayaking. We also do a lot of preparatory work for clients who know that they are about to have surgery. Strengthing the muscles that will be needed after the operation before you have the proceedure done can drastically reduce your rehabilitation time and pain after the surgery. Bursitis is inflammation of the bursae of the hip. The bursae are small fluid filled ‘cushions’ that reduce friction between tendons or between tendons and bone. Bursitis can be treated with rest, activity modification and even injections of anti-inflammatory medications. It is important however, to source to true nature of the problem, which lead to the irritation in the first place. The answer to this usually lies within stability if the core, hips and pelvis when moving. Treatment therefore should include core and lower limb strengthening and control exercises. We also teach a lot of self treatment strategies that you can use at home to reduce chronic tension around the hips which can provide great relief. We also have lots of tips on how to sit, and sleep, as these are often painfull when the bursae are inflammed. |
